Global sports broadcaster ELEVEN SPORTS has hosted the first ever LaLiga Legends match to be held in Europe.
The celebration of football featured former stars of the Spanish league and the Polish national team and brought supporters together to produce a vibrant atmosphere and high levels of fan engagement in the build-up to and during the game.
ELEVEN engaged supporters in the lead up to the event by granting full access to the legends with a special autograph signing session which took place at ELEVEN SPORTS Polish HQ at Plac Europejski in the centre of Warsaw last Wednesday.
Real Madrid legend Fernando Morientes answered questions from fans during a Q&A session on Facebook and the pre-game press conference which featured Morientes, Gaizka Mendieta and Fernando Sanz achieved 150,000 viewers on Facebook Live – underlining the high levels of interest, interactivity and engagement with the event.
On the match-day itself, the players and supporters mingled in a specially constructed fan-zone enabling fans to meet their idols and take photos. The fan-zone featured 5 a side matches, FIFA game stations and other activations. A junior El Clásico game also took place prior to the match with former Barcelona and Real Madrid legends Gianluca Zambrotta and Francisco Pavon present to meet and greet the young players.
“We were very proud to be chosen by LaLiga to host this event and we are delighted to strengthen our partnership with them while also providing an amazing festival of football for the fans,” said Danny Menken, Group Managing Director, ELEVEN SPORTS. “This is a unique and exciting way of building relations with fans which breaks out of the traditional broadcaster-viewer relationship. The match has been a huge success and we look forward to building on this in the future.”
“The first LaLiga Legends match to be held in Europe has been a great celebration of football.” said Fernando Sanz, Head of International Sports Projects, LaLiga. “We would like to thank ELEVEN SPORTS for the fantastic effort they have put into this event and the way they have engaged fans in the stadium and those watching from home.”
Several former LaLiga stars took part in the main event including former Real Madrid Galactico’s Fernando Morientes, Christian Karembeu and Míchel Salgado; Gaizka Mendieta of Valencia CF and FC Barcelona and Gianluca Zambrotta of FC Barcelona. Other players include Joan Capdevila, Michel Salgado, Fernando Sanz and David Albelda.
The LaLiga Legends team faced a squad of former Polish internationals including the former Real Madrid and Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, Tomasz Frankowski, Tomasz Hajto, and Michał Żewłakow.
ELEVEN SPORTS has engaged fans with its lean-in, on-air style and helped to significantly increase the exposure of LaLiga in Poland airing 8 games LIVE per matchday across the last two seasons. The passion and excitement surrounding the Spanish league in Poland is evident with a record number of almost 500,000 viewers tuning in to the last El Clásico clash in April.
